We fight for good nutrition
The association "Social Activities in Kibeho" is an association of 21 women and was established in 2013 at a local health centre with the help of the University of St. Elizabeth in Bratislava and SlovakAid organisation.
The association supports women in care about their children, who are often malnutrition. Our program offers free nutritional food for children, we monitor their weight during adolescence and adulthood with contributions to general health insurance.
Our goal is to teach single mothers financial literacy through sales and product creation by handwork such as sewing, embroidery and knitting. In our centre, women have 4 sewing machines and 3 knitting machines to adapt themselves to social life and bring money to their families.
What does financial literacy and social life mean in Rwanda?
Volunteers from Slovakia buy the materials for the woman, which need to prepare products such as fabrics, wool, threads, sewing supplies and after we sell it at symbolic prices. From contracts for association such as, for example, sewing uniforms for kids in schools, we then create a salary for the work. We teach women to find a order for the association and to cooperate with each other. Another important aspect is learning to sell their own products on the local market for pilgrims who come to Kibeho, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world.
What does health insurance mean in Rwanda?
The state divides the Rwandan population into three categories. Women from the association fall into the second category, which means that health insurance is paid at 3,000rwf per year ($3,44/3€). If one person pays general health insurance, all members of the family must pay for it under the law, which they can not afford.
